Simla’s Story :: Part I :: Onset & Denial

Author’s note: This is the first installment in a series of articles about how I have healed from several health conditions and come to live very well with my autoimmune conditions, which are in full remission as long as I respect my triggers. The specific autoimmune conditions I will be writing about are:  fibromyalgia; undifferentiated connective tissue disorder; and, immunotoxicity. The other health conditions I will refer to in this context are:  chronic fatigue syndrome; adrenal fatigue; asthma; chronic bronchitis; pneumonia; food and environmental allergies; chronic bronchitis; multiple chemical sensitivity; lyme disease (also referred to as lyme’s disease); medication-induced hepatitis and pancreatitis; IBS; digestive issues; leaky gut; dysbiosis; candida; heavy metal toxicity, and others. While it’s personally difficult to relive a lot of this through the act of writing, I hope to provide the information and inspiration I wish I had while I was going through this life-altering experience. I write from the perspectives of a patient, a busy professional, an entrepreneur, a wife, a daughter, and as a certified health coach and nutrition expert, which is what my experience has led me to become. I’d love to hear from you if this proves helpful to you – you can email me at hello(at)enjoydelicioushealth.com. Simla’s Story Healing from Autoimmune: Series Starting Week of 12/21/2009

[UPDATE: I changed my start date to the week of 12/21/2009. With how busy this month has been for me, I haven't found the head space or quiet, contemplative time to do this type of writing. I will also be clarifying what I mean by "healing" at that time, as this question was raised by a couple of readers recently. Until then, have a wonderful holiday season! Be well ~ Simla ]

30 Things About My Invisible Illness You May Not Know

Do you have an Invisible Illness? Welcome to the club!

Groucho Marx, comedian and actor, once said, “I don’t want to belong to any club that will accept people like me as a member.” The Invisible Illness “club” is like that for me. I was invited – against my will – to this club in the summer of 2006. And then, just like Mr. Marx, decided to withdraw my membership. I now live in near/full remission. [Search for "Simla's Story" on this blog to find posts that go further into details about my life living with and healing from invisible illnesses.]

From Invisible to Invincible ™ Part I – a.k.a Healing from Fibromyalgia and Much More

I’ve been procrastinating again. I finished a book, started another one, woke up at 5am because I had half a glass of red wine last night for the first time in ages, lay awake in bed for two hours, worked out for 1.5 hours morning, chatted with a neighbor, chatted with another neighbor, made tea, made breakfast, watched a cat catch and eat a bird, doodled on some other social networking site. Now I’m writing this paragraph. Everything to keep myself from starting to write about what I really need to write about: my how-I-got-really-really-sick-and-how-I-got-well-again story.

Simla Somturk Wickless Featured as Patient Testimonial on CPMC's Health & Healing Clinic Website

It’s LIVE!

It’s funny to see my own picture on someone else’s website, but I’m getting used to it. Back in March 2009, I gave a speech at the CPMC Health & Healing Clinic’s annual fundraiser about my healing story. Click here for the related post.  This post has the video recording as well as the text of my speech.

Now, they have me and my story up on their website’s home page, pictures and all. The photo shoot was so much fun. There are actually two pictures that made it up, and the one with my health “team” with me in the middle is my favorite. It’s a beautiful representation of the type of protective support I had during my healing journey. CLICK HERE to see the website and read the text of the speech.

Simla's Story: Healing from Multiple Autoimmune Conditions. A Radio Interview with Alice Moore on Energy Talk Radio.

It’s up ! It’s up!

Alice and I had so much fun on this radio interview (you’ll hear a lot of laughing) and now I’m happy to share it with you. We chat about my experience healing from several autoimmune and other health conditions and explore the topic of food as medicine.

Click here to stream or download the MP3 recording of the show. I come on around minute 10.

Let me know if you have questions or suggestions on what you’d like me to share in future radio shows, teleclasses, or in my monthly eZine.

Enjoy!

"Exposed: the great [genetically modified] crops myth"

“Exposed: the great GM crops myth: Major new study shows that modified soya produces 10 per cent less food than its conventional equivalent”

Read the whole article here:

http://www.independent.co.uk/environment/green-living/exposed-the-great-gm-crops-myth-812179.html

I’m so happy to see this. Will be interesting to hear from those of you who prefer to see hard-core scientific proof and numbers behind everything.

Finally, part of the PR veil is parting…  Although one could argue this veil has been see-through for a loooong time, which I believe it has.

I don’t need this article to tell me a little bit using a few numbers  (even if it is well researched) when my body already knows a lot about the effects of GM foods.

KNOW YOUR BODY. Tracking Your Autoimmune Symptoms is a MUST for Healing.

I had pepperoni pizza last night and it was GOOD! Two years ago, that was a total no-no, as my body was a mess and not ready to handle the onslaught of the pepperoni or the pizza dough or the cheese (all of which I react to where my symptoms flare up).

Today, however, I can have some once in a while and be pretty much ok because:

  1. I know EXACTLY how it affects me.
  2. I know EXACTLY how much I can have and how often, to stay balanced and not let my symptoms come back full force.
