Your Magnificent Liver: Get to Know, Love & Treat Yours Well

October is National Liver Awareness Month. Are you ready to love your liver?

I love mine. Dearly. After reading this, you’ll love yours too.

About 5.5 years ago, when my health pretty much exploded and I was lost in the maze of conventional medicine, one of the complications I had was medication-induced hepatitis (inflammation of the liver) and pancreatitis (inflammation of the pancreas).

Trust me, it sucked.

No thanks to that and a cluster of many, many other health issues, I was laid up in bed for months. I had to leave my career and go on disability for the ensuing two years.

Tips for Healing from Fibromyalgia

Last Thursday, May 12th, was National Fibromyalgia Awareness Day.

I chose to post a series of free tips on how to heal from fibromyalgia on Twitter that day and got a few requests asking if I could please compile the tips all in one place for easier access. Your wish is my command! Here they are (below), straight from Twitter.

Of course, there are many facets to fibromyalgia and its usual companion, chronic fatigue syndrome. These tips are very high level and there are many more steps one must take to heal. However, these tips are a good start. Over time, as you weave all these pieces together and dig further to uncover your particular root causes and address those too with the right support, you will experience relief and, hopefully, full remission.

The Rise of the Sunshine Vitamin: Why Vitamin D Matters & How to Get Enough

Vitamin D intrigues me. It is classified as both a vitamin and a hormone, and has remained somewhat of an enigma for several decades. A heightened awareness of vitamin D in recent years accompanied with a rising tide of research is bringing this micronutrient to the forefront of nutritional science. My personal interest stems from my reliance on Vitamin D3 supplementation, which has helped me reverse my multiple autoimmune conditions (including fibromyalgia and undifferentiated connective tissue disorder) as well as other health issues. Another personal reason is that, sadly, my maternal uncle passed away at the age of 18, likely due to rickets resulting from an overprotected childhood.

Simla’s Cooling Summer Soup

Cooling. Easy. Delicious. Perfect after a long day at the beach or just to cool off from the summer heat. I created this recipe after craving watercress (yes, really!) for two days one recent summer.

Its ingredients are naturally cooling and support the usually overworked liver in detoxing, while providing lots of anti-oxidants to help prevent premature aging and natural body wear and tear. The healthy fats from the avocado will gently satiate you and are anti-inflammatory and happy-chemical-producing mini miracles.

½ small bunch of watercress

2 small green zucchini (peeled, if not organic)

Simla’s Story :: Part 2 :: Anger & Bewilderment

Author’s note: This is the second installment in a series of articles about how I have healed from several health conditions and come to live very well with my autoimmune conditions, which are in full remission as long as I respect my triggers. The specific autoimmune conditions I will be writing about are:  fibromyalgia; undifferentiated connective tissue disorder; and, immunotoxicity. The other health conditions I will refer to in this context are:  chronic fatigue syndrome; adrenal fatigue; asthma; chronic bronchitis; pneumonia; food and environmental allergies; chronic bronchitis; multiple chemical sensitivity; lyme disease (also referred to as lyme’s disease); medication-induced hepatitis and pancreatitis; IBS; digestive issues; leaky gut; dysbiosis; candida; heavy metal toxicity, and others. While it’s personally difficult to relive a lot of this through the act of writing, I hope to provide the information and inspiration I wish I had while I was going through this life-altering experience.
