Your Magnificent Liver: Get to Know, Love & Treat Yours Well

October is National Liver Awareness Month. Are you ready to love your liver?

I love mine. Dearly. After reading this, you’ll love yours too.

About 5.5 years ago, when my health pretty much exploded and I was lost in the maze of conventional medicine, one of the complications I had was medication-induced hepatitis (inflammation of the liver) and pancreatitis (inflammation of the pancreas).

Trust me, it sucked.

Your Magnificent (and funny-looking) Liver

No thanks to that and a cluster of many, many other health issues, I was laid up in bed for months. I had to leave my career and go on disability for the ensuing two years.

Curried Quinoa with Cauliflower & Artichokes

Do you ever stop and admire the cauliflower and broccoli you see at the farmer’s market or in the grocery store? No? Well, maybe you’ll want to after reading these facts and trying the recipe below.

Welcome. Meet the cruciferous (brassica) family of veggies, which includes: broccoli, broccoli rabe, broccolini, cauliflower (white, orange, green, and purple), all cabbages (white, purple, napa, etc.), brussels sprouts, collard greens, and all kinds of kale.

The cruciferous family, if they were human, would be a very loving and nurturing family. No dysfunction here. Here’s why:

Tips for Healing from Fibromyalgia

Last Thursday, May 12th, was National Fibromyalgia Awareness Day.

I chose to post a series of free tips on how to heal from fibromyalgia on Twitter that day and got a few requests asking if I could please compile the tips all in one place for easier access. Your wish is my command! Here they are (below), straight from Twitter.

Of course, there are many facets to fibromyalgia and its usual companion, chronic fatigue syndrome. These tips are very high level and there are many more steps one must take to heal. However, these tips are a good start. Over time, as you weave all these pieces together and dig further to uncover your particular root causes and address those too with the right support, you will experience relief and, hopefully, full remission.

Are You a Closet Member of Fatigued Anonymous?

One of my biggest pet peeves is feeling fatigued. I can’t stand it. Feeling like I can’t get enough sleep and a whole day of dragging and feeling out of it? No thanks.

Having reversed several autoimmune conditions plus Chronic Fatigue Syndrome, which once led to my sleeping up to 20 hours a day for months on end, I have no intention of ever heading back there again. These days, my new default looks something like this: bouncing out of bed and sustaining a steady stream of energy all day until my body gently tells me it’s ready to go to sleep again at night… no matter how demanding my day.

2011 Resolutions, Deliciously Resolved!

January is typically a month when people get motivated and serious about their health. Whether your plans include joining a gym or trying a new diet to shed extra holiday pounds, the New Year starts with the best of intentions.

But very few people stay motivated. Often after only a few weeks of trying an extreme diet or exercise program, we slip back into old habits and feel guilty for not being able to maintain our goals. Is this you?

40 Stories of Thanks: Andrea’s Success Story

Most of us have an interesting relationship with our health. When we feel good, we don’t think much about it. But when something goes wrong, like a flu or worse, it’s a big wake-up call. Suddenly, we think about all those bad habits that might have contributed to the breakdown.

What’s Your Food Personality?

We all have food personalities that we have developed over the years. Some of these traits may feel good in the moment, but they don’t serve your ultimate health goals.

I’ve identified the top food personalities that I see in my own clients. I relate to many of them as I struggled with some of the same habits for years. You may not believe it, but I was once a quadruple latte drinker and now, if I had even one cup, I’d be a wreck for days.

What’s your food personality and is it working for you? Or do you want to deal with it… deliciously?
