Talk. Not Treats: A Powerful Manifesto

My brilliant client, entrepreneur Karri Flatla, recently penned a manifesto borne from her personal frustration as a parent to two young children, as a participant in a society that tends to take the easy way out by bribing with “treats” versus taking the time to talk and get to the core of what children (and the rest of us!) REALLY need.
I just read it and have massive goose bumps. Well said, Karri.
Here it is: Talk. Not Treats.
How do you handle the “treats vs. talk” situations you find yourself (and your children) in?
Product Review: Fantastic Travel Meal Option – Hallelujah!

I’ve been traveling a lot lately. And eating well while traveling on the road can be a challenge, especially when working around food allergies or intolerances. Even I don’t always want to take the trouble of organizing myself well enough to take home-prepared travel meals along with me, or I end up having to cobble a meal together to avoid my food intolerances.
I also love to scope out new food products everywhere I go: in corner stores, grocery stores, restaurants, coffee shops, airports… you name it. Well, I did a double take at the Baltimore-Washington Airport this week as I zeroed in on a brilliant food option that made my heart sing (yes, I get easily excited by food): the perfect travel food!
Product Review: Pure Indian Foods’ Organic Grass-fed Ghee

The folks at Pure Indian Foods sent me a jar of their organic grass-fed ghee a while ago.
I frequently receive requests to review products, but unless I have an overall positive review of the product, I decline to post anything. Why send around bad karma? Maybe I’m too nice. Oh well.
These past few days, I finally had the occasion to really test-drive this ghee, as I’m doing short ayurvedic cleanse at home. Ghee is often used in Ayurvedic medicine as a healing food, and I believe is the prevalent source of fat / oils used in traditional Indian cooking, and it was a part of my cleanse.

If you think all diets are cringe-worthy, think again. A good “diet” is one that is deliciously varied, flexible, rich, and that works for your unique body and lifestyle. Evolving your relationship with food can help you stop with the fads, restrictions, and “shoulds” and discover a way of eating that your body, taste buds, and life can all thrive on.
Delicious Health Presents The 3 Levels of Evolutionary Eating TM
Level 1: Impulsive The most primitive way of eating with very low bodily awareness. You go by the dictum “I want” and make choices mostly based on perceived convenience and immediate gratification. Often lends itself to mindless or emotional eating, unwanted weight gain, burnout/fatigue, and a host of chronic health issues.

The “official” USDA dietary guidelines, released as a joint effort between the U.S. Department of Agriculture (“USDA”) and the Department of Health and Human Services, make a splash every five years when they are updated based on the most recent research. This past month was no exception.
February is also Wise Consumer Health Month, established by the American Institute for Preventive Medicine to teach people how to be more involved with their health care. The new 2011 USDA dietary guidelines offer a great starting point to talk about how you can become wiser with your own food choices and become an advocate for your own health.

I was inspired by my recent work as the pro bono nutritionist for the Plastiki crew as well as a reader’s question (below – thanks, Nick!) to write this article, plus an upcoming visit to a client’s home to do a pantry raid and audit. Fun!
Nick’s question was:

“What do you keep your fridge or pantry stocked with?
Or what is always on your shopping list?”
The answer is… it depends. (That’s the old management consultant in me peeping out.)
